La Despedida

La Despedida (“The Farewell”) tells a quiet, symbolic story of remembrance through expertly engraved ceramic work. Created by Hilario Quezada in the Mata Ortiz tradition, this spherical vase features a layered cemetery scene etched into a tricolor surface. The natural clay serves as the base, while deep red and black hues are burnished to frame a dancing skeletal figure surrounded by crosses, birds, and swaying grass.
Unlike his monochromatic pieces, this version showcases a bold use of color and geometry, especially in the patterned rim and framing arcs. The detail and symbolism reflect both folk art humor and spiritual depth—an homage to those who have passed and a reminder of cultural continuity through celebration and art.
