Contemporary Metate Form

A modern interpretation of one of Mexico’s most iconic domestic tools, this Contemporary Metate Form by Talavera de la Reyna bridges pre-Hispanic tradition with contemporary design. The piece features a geometric volcanic stone base—referencing the ancient metate grinding stone—topped with a polished ceramic roller, glazed in soft sage green and etched with abstract vein-like patterns. Elevated by three sturdy legs, the form is both architectural and ceremonial. What makes this work striking is its reinterpretation of function into symbolism. Traditionally used for grinding maize, the metate becomes here a sculptural dialogue between past and present, utility and beauty.
